The Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Ri Trek is a breathtaking high-altitude journey through the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal, offering a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and stunning natural beauty. From the thrilling flight into Lukla Airport, you begin an unforgettable trek across diverse landscapes-lush forests, roaring rivers, majestic glaciers, and high mountain passes. As you pass through vibrant Sherpa villages, you'll witness their evolving lifestyle and traditions, and enjoy hearty meals and warm hospitality in cozy teahouses each night.
This trek takes you to two of the most iconic viewpoints in the Himalayas: Everest Base Camp (5,364m) and Gokyo Ri (5,357m). While Everest Base Camp offers an unforgettable close-up experience with the world's highest peak, the panoramic summit of Gokyo Ri provides arguably the most stunning 360° views in the entire Everest region, including four of the world’s 8,000m giants-Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu-plus the massive Ngozumpa Glacier. Crossing the dramatic Cho La Pass (5,420m) adds an exhilarating challenge with breathtaking icy vistas that many other treks don’t offer. Compared to classic Everest Base Camp and other treks, this route combines diverse landscapes and views that are both grand and serene, making it one of the best trekking experiences in the Himalayas.
Every day brings about 4-7 hours of walking, with carefully planned acclimatization days in places like Namche, Dingboche, and Gokyo to help your body adapt to the altitude. You’ll observe diverse wildlife, including yaks and Himalayan birds, and meet our experienced Sherpa guides and porters, who make the journey both safe and enriching. This trek offers not just epic mountain scenery, but also authentic cultural encounters, spiritual insight, and a true once-in-a-lifetime experience in the heart of the Himalayas.
Best Time for the Trek
The ideal seasons for this trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to December). In spring, the trail is alive with blooming rhododendrons and mild temperatures, while autumn offers crystal-clear skies, stable weather, and the best mountain views. Winter (December-February) is very cold with heavy snow at higher altitudes, making Cho La Pass difficult, and summer (June-August) brings monsoon rains and poor visibility, not ideal for high mountain trekking.
We also offer similar thrilling journeys like the Everest Three High Passes Trek, the classic Everest Base Camp Trek, and the peaceful Gokyo Valley Trek-each delivering best-in-a-lifetime moments, dramatic scenery, and deep Himalayan connections.
➡️Stunning Himalayan Views: Experience some of the most breathtaking panoramic vistas in Nepal, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu from Gokyo Ri’s summit-offering arguably the best 360° mountain views in the Everest region.

➡️Cultural Immersion: Visit vibrant Sherpa villages like Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, explore Buddhist monasteries, and witness the traditional lifestyle and warm hospitality of the local people.
➡️Altitude Experience & Acclimatization: Well-planned trek itinerary with key acclimatization stops to safely adapt to high altitudes while enjoying 4-7 hours of trekking daily.

Welcome to Nepal! Upon arrival, you will be warmly greeted by Sole Encounters Trekking and transferred to your hotel. During the day, your guide or representative will meet with you to brief you about the trek and assist you with any preparations. You'll also have time to explore Thamel, Kathmandu's vibrant tourist hub, where you can soak in the lively atmosphere and get excited about your upcoming adventure.
If your flight to Lukla departs from Ramechhap Airport, be prepared for an early start. During peak season, many flights operate from Ramechhap, necessitating a 5-hour drive to the airport. Your travel company will provide all necessary details regarding this arrangement before your arrival in Nepal.
Your adventure begins with a scenic flight to Lukla (2,800m), one of the world’s most thrilling airstrips, offering stunning Himalayan views. After meeting your trekking crew, you’ll start your trek to Phakding, a 3–4 hour walk covering 8 km, passing Sherpa villages, crossing suspension bridges, and enjoying the Khumbu landscapes.
📌 Note: In peak trekking seasons (autumn and spring), flights to Lukla often depart from Ramechhap, requiring a 6-hour drive the day before. Until September 25 and from March 1–15, flights may operate from Kathmandu. We’ll inform you in advance so you're prepared.
⛅ If your flight is delayed due to weather, options include waiting, taking a helicopter (extra cost), or switching to another region like Annapurna or Langtang.
Today’s trek begins in Phakding and follows the Dudh Koshi River through lush pine forests, crossing several suspension bridges, including the iconic Hillary Suspension Bridge. The trail steadily ascends and enters Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo, where permits are checked before continuing the climb toward Namche Bazaar.
Along the way, trekkers typically stop for lunch at Jorsalle or a nearby teahouse. It’s the last settlement before the steep climb to Namche, making it a convenient and scenic rest stop.
The trail is well-maintained but becomes steeper and more challenging after the final bridge. Expect rocky sections, switchbacks, and a sustained uphill push toward Namche.
Distance: 10–12 kilometers
Walking Time: 6–7 hours
Altitude Gain: Approx. 800 meters (Phakding 2,610m to Namche Bazaar 3,440m)
Trail Condition: Mixed terrain with gradual ups and downs early, steep climb in the final section
As the path rises, trekkers may catch their first glimpse of Mount Everest, as well as views of Thamserku and other Himalayan peaks.
Namche Bazaar, perched on a hillside in a natural amphitheater, welcomes trekkers with its vibrant energy. Once a key stop for Tibetan traders, today it’s the main hub of the Khumbu region, known for its cafes, bakeries, shops, and lively Saturday market. It’s also an ideal place to rest, acclimatize, and experience authentic Sherpa culture and history.
Today is an acclimatization day to help adjust to the higher altitude. We take a short hike to the Everest View Hotel (3,810m), offering stunning views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and other peaks. After enjoying the panorama, we descend back to Namche Bazaar for rest.
Walking Time: 4 hours (2 hours up to Everest View Hotel, 2 hours back to Namche)
Distance: 6–7 km (round trip)
Altitude Gain/Loss: 400 meters
In Namche, we visit the Sherpa Museum and explore the local market for souvenirs. This is also the last chance to withdraw cash or exchange money at the ATM before continuing the trek. The day is perfect for relaxing, shopping, and acclimatizing before we move higher into the mountains
The trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole is a scenic yet challenging day, covering approximately 11–13 km in about 7 hours. The route takes you higher into the mountains, offering breathtaking views of Himalayan peaks such as Thamserku, Kantega, and Ama Dablam. The trail begins with a steady climb to Mong La, a beautiful ridge-top village where you can stop for morning tea and refill your water. From there, the path descends to Phortse Tenga, nestled in a forest of rhododendron and birch-an ideal spot for lunch. Afterward, the trail ascends steeply through pine and rhododendron forests, so it’s important to go slowly and stay hydrated as the altitude increases.
Dole is a small, quiet settlement with a few teahouses catering to trekkers. Historically, it has served as a seasonal yak grazing area for the Sherpa people during the summer. Surrounded by alpine beauty, Dole offers a peaceful environment and is an excellent location for acclimatization before continuing toward the higher Gokyo region.
Today’s trek from Dole to Machhermo is a gradual ascent covering about 6 km (3.7 miles) in 5 hours. The trail gently climbs alongside the Dudh Koshi River, with spectacular views of Cho Oyu, Thamserku, and Kangtega. You’ll pass small settlements and yak pastures along the way, with some short, steeper sections-so pace yourself and go slowly as the altitude increases.
Machhermo is a quiet village known for its health post, offering basic care and information about altitude sickness. The village is also famous for a reported yeti sighting in 1974. Surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, it’s an ideal place to rest and acclimatize before heading higher into the Gokyo Valley.
The trek from Machhermo to Gokyo Lake is a gradual 5-hour walk covering around 7 km (4.3 miles). The trail ascends gently past ridges and along the massive Ngozumpa Glacier, offering striking views of Cho Oyu, Kangtega, and the surrounding peaks.
Once in Gokyo, you can explore its famous turquoise lakes and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The village is also a great place for acclimatization. In the afternoon, consider a discussion with your guide about hiking to Gokyo Ri (5,357m), either for sunset or early the next morning.
The hike to Gokyo Ri offers one of the best panoramic views in the Everest region, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, along with stunning views of the glacier and Gokyo Lakes below. This is a key highlight of the trek and highly recommended for those feeling well-acclimatized.
The hike to Gokyo Ri is a steep and rewarding climb of about 4 km round trip, taking 4–5 hours. The trail is rocky and challenging, but the summit offers one of the best panoramic views in the Himalayas.
From the top, you’ll see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, along with the vast Ngozumpa Glacier and the stunning Gokyo Lakes, especially Dudh Pokhari, the largest of the six lakes in the valley. Many trekkers choose this hike for its unforgettable sunrise or sunset views.
After returning to Gokyo, take time to rest and review plans with your guide for the next stage of the trek, preparing gear and essentials for the days ahead.
This 4-5 km (2.5-mile) trek crosses the Ngozumpa Glacier and can be challenging, especially in deep snow (3–4 feet), making it essential to check trail conditions with your guide. If the trail is closed due to heavy snow, an alternative route via Phortse Village is available.
The trail involves glacier crossings and some steep ascents and descents. It's important to proceed with caution and plan ahead, as Thangnak is the key staging point before tackling the demanding Cho La Pass the next day.
Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the glacier and nearby peaks. Thangnak is a quiet settlement mainly used for acclimatization and rest. In the evening, consult your guide about the next day's plan, departure time, gear requirements, and possible snow-related challenges to ensure you're fully prepared.
Start early today for this challenging and rewarding trek. The 13 km (8-mile) journey over Cho-La Pass takes 8–9 hours, with a steep, rocky climb and glacier crossing. The trail can be icy and slippery—crampons may be needed—so go slowly and carefully.
At the top (5,420m), you'll be rewarded with stunning views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. The descent to Dzongla (4,855m) is steep and can be tricky, so take your time.
Carry enough water, snacks or a packed lunch, and dress in warm layers. There are no facilities along the way, so be fully prepared. Always talk with your guide about the trail conditions, gear, and safety. If the weather is bad or you're not feeling well, consider the alternative route via Phortse.
Once you reach Dzongla, take time to rest at a teahouse and review the day with your guide. Crossing Cho-La Pass is a big achievement-well done!
Today's 8 km (5-mile) trek from Dzongla to Lobuche takes about 5 hours, with a moderate trail and gradual ascents offering stunning Himalayan views. You'll begin with a gentle climb through meadows and yak pastures, enjoying sights of Lobuche East and Nuptse, then follow the Khumbu Glacier moraine.
Upon reaching Lobuche, you’ll rejoin the main Everest Base Camp trail. This quiet settlement has several teahouses, perfect for resting and acclimatizing before the final push to EBC.
Stay well-hydrated, eat nutritious food, and always talk with your guide to review the plan for reaching Everest Base Camp the next day.
Today's trek is a significant achievement, taking you to Everest Base Camp and back to Gorak Shep, covering a total distance of approximately 15-17 km (9.3 miles) in about 8 hours.
The trail from Lobuche to Gorak Shep is challenging, with rocky and uneven paths following the Khumbu Glacier. After a short break in Gorak Shep, you'll continue to Everest Base Camp. The route to EBC is marked by rugged terrain and stunning views of the Khumbu Icefall. Although you won't see Everest's summit from Base Camp, the surrounding peaks, including Nuptse and Khumbutse, are spectacular.
Everest Base Camp, located at 5,364m (17,598ft), has been a historic starting point for climbers attempting to summit Everest since the 1950s. It serves as a temporary village for mountaineers, especially during the climbing seasons in spring and autumn.
Returning to Gorak Shep, you'll find basic teahouses with very poor toilet facilities and limited drinking water, which you can buy. The area is extremely cold, so prepare for an uncomfortable night. If you prefer, you can continue trekking to Lobuche for better accommodations.
Start your day with an early morning hike to Kala Patthar, reaching an elevation of 5,550m (18,209ft). The hike is challenging and takes about 2-3 hours, covering approximately 3 km (1.9 miles) round trip. From the summit, you'll have breathtaking panoramic views of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, and the surrounding peaks, offering some of the best photographic opportunities of the trek.
After descending back to Gorak Shep for breakfast, you'll begin your trek down to Pheriche, which sits at 4,250m (13,945ft). This descent covers a distance of approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) and takes around 7-8 hours. The trail retraces steps through Lobuche and continues downhill, offering stunning views of the Himalayan landscape as you lose altitude and enter greener areas.
Pheriche is a historic village known for its role as a medical and acclimatization stop for trekkers and climbers. It hosts the Himalayan Rescue Association's aid post, providing medical assistance and information on altitude sickness. The village has a few teahouses and lodges, making it a comfortable place to rest and recover after descending from higher altitudes.
Enjoy the more abundant oxygen and warmer temperatures as you descend, marking a significant milestone in your trek.
The trek from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar takes around 7 hours, with a combination of uphill, downhill, and flat sections. The trail covers a distance of about 13-15 km and involves a climb of 600–700 meters in altitude.
Along the way, you’ll pass through charming villages and temples, offering a glimpse of local life and culture. The trail offers spectacular views of the Himalayas, including Ama Dablam and Lhotse, and crosses rivers and suspension bridges.
After reaching Namche Bazaar, enjoy a refreshing hot shower, relax with drinks, and explore the shops and bars. It's a great place to unwind after the long trek and prepare for the next leg of the journey.
The trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla takes around 7-8 hours, covering a distance of approximately 19–22km. The trail includes a mix of uphill, downhill, and flat sections, with varied terrain that passes through villages and crosses suspension bridges. Along the way, you will encounter beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
While trekking, you may be disrupted by donkeys and mules carrying goods along the narrow paths, so it’s essential to walk safely and give them space to pass. Be mindful of your surroundings to avoid accidents.
You will stop for lunch on the way, usually at a teahouse along the trail, before continuing on to Lukla. After reaching Lukla, enjoy a celebratory dinner and drinks with your trekking crew. If you wish, you can share tips and thank them for their hard work. Your guide will also inform you about your flight time back to Kathmandu the following day.
After your trek, you will take a flight from Lukla to Ramechhap, offering scenic views of the Himalayas. From Ramechhap, you'll drive back to Kathmandu, which takes about 5-6 hours. Upon arrival, you can freshen up, change into clean clothes, and then explore Thamel, the bustling tourist hub of Kathmandu.
Please note, flights to Lukla from Kathmandu are typically available until September 25th. After this date, flights will be diverted to Ramechhap due to congestion at Kathmandu’s airport, especially during the spring season (March 15th onward).
You’ll also receive a certificate of achievement for completing the trek. Enjoy your time in Kathmandu before your final departure!
Today is a free day to enjoy Kathmandu at your own pace. You may visit iconic sites such as Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, or Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple). Or simply rest, relax, and enjoy shopping in Thamel for souvenirs, local crafts, and delicious food.
If you'd like to join any optional tours or activities, feel free to contact us—we can arrange a guide and transport at an additional cost.
Please also let us know your international flight details so we can arrange your airport transfer. If you're planning to stay extra days in Kathmandu, we’re happy to assist with accommodation or activities.
We're always here to help-thank you for trekking with us!
As your journey comes to an end, we will transfer you to the airport for your onward flight. It's time to say goodbye, but we hope this won’t be the last time our paths cross. We thank you for choosing us to be part of your unforgettable adventure, and we look forward to welcoming you back for more incredible experiences in the future.
Safe travels and see you again soon!
Choose the EBC via Gokyo Lakes Trek for a unique and enriching Himalayan adventure. This route combines the classic Everest Base Camp experience with the stunning beauty of the Gokyo Lakes-a series of turquoise glacial lakes set amidst dramatic mountain scenery. Enjoy diverse landscapes, fewer crowds, panoramic views from Gokyo Ri, and a chance to cross the challenging Cho La Pass. It's a perfect choice for trekkers seeking a more scenic and less-traveled path in the Everest region.
The EBC via Gokyo Lakes Trek is moderately to highly challenging, due to long trekking days, high altitude (up to 5,545m / 18,192 ft), and the Cho La Pass crossing. Good fitness and some trekking experience are recommended.
The best times to go are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-December), when the weather is stable, skies are clear, and views are at their best. Avoid the monsoon (June–August) and winter (December–February) due to heavy rain or snow and cold conditions.
The EBC via Gokyo Lakes Trek reaches a maximum altitude of 5,545m (18,192 ft) at Kala Patthar.
To acclimatize safely and avoid altitude sickness:
✅ Ascend gradually with acclimatization days (e.g., Namche & Gokyo)
✅ Don’t climb more than 700m per day
✅ Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol
✅ Go slowly and always follow your guide’s and crew’s instructions
✅ Wear proper layered gear to handle changing weather
✅ Consider Diamox (with your doctor’s advice)
Daily trekking on the EBC via Gokyo Lakes Trek typically lasts 5 to 7 hours, depending on the day’s distance, altitude, and trail conditions. Some challenging days, like crossing Cho La Pass, may take 8–9 hours, while acclimatization days involve shorter hikes.
Certainly! A Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card are required. Our team will provide assistance in obtaining these permits.
During the trek, you'll stay in teahouses with basic but clean rooms, usually with two single beds and shared toilets. Some places offer hot showers, WiFi, and charging for an extra fee.
Meals are served in teahouse dining halls and include a mix of local and international dishes like dal bhat, noodles, soups, pasta, eggs, and pancakes. Tea, coffee, and bottled or boiled water are available.
Toilets are mostly shared, with western-style toilets at lower elevations. In higher or remote areas, only basic squat toilets may be available due to limited infrastructure.
Here's a list of recommended trekking gear:

Electronics:

Portable charger or power bank
Remember to adapt the list based on the specific trek and its unique requirements. It's always advisable to check the weather and terrain conditions before finalizing your packing list
Charging is available in most teahouses, usually in the dining hall for an extra cost. It's best to carry a power bank and spare batteries due to limited electricity.
Wi-Fi is accessible via Everest Link or Airlink cards, sold at teahouses. Hot showers are available on request, also at an additional cost.
Mobile signal is generally available up to Tengboche and Everest Base Camp, but there’s no signal between Dingboche and Lobuche on the Gokyo side.
ATM and money exchange facilities are available in Kathmandu, Lukla, and Namche Bazaar. It is advisable to carry Nepalese currency in smaller denominations for purchases during the trek. However, we recommend bringing sufficient cash from Kathmandu before embarking on the trek. In case it's not enough, carry some additional currency and your Visa cards. Please note that using ATMs incurs an extra bank service charge of 4-5%, and this applies at Kathmandu airport as well.
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for all participants. It must cover high-altitude trekking (above 5,000m), emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, and medical treatment during the trek.
If you need any advice or recommendations on choosing the right insurance, we’re happy to help.

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), can occur when ascending to higher altitudes too quickly. Symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath. To reduce altitude sickness, consider the following measures:
Gradual Ascent:
Allow your body time to acclimate by gradually ascending to higher altitudes.
Include acclimatization days in your itinerary, especially at critical points.
Stay Hydrated:
Drink plenty of water to stay well-hydrated and help your body adjust to the altitude.
Balanced Diet:
Consume a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates and avoid heavy, greasy meals.
Include foods high in potassium, like bananas, to aid in acclimatization.
Avoid Alcohol and Tobacco:
Limit alcohol consumption and avoid smoking, as they can contribute to dehydration and exacerbate altitude symptoms.
Medication:
Consult with a healthcare professional before the trek and discuss the possibility of taking medications like acetazolamide to prevent altitude sickness.
Rest and Acclimatization Days:
Take sufficient rest and include acclimatization days in your trekking itinerary to allow your body to adjust.
Descend if Symptoms Persist:
If symptoms of altitude sickness persist or worsen, descend to a lower altitude promptly.
It's crucial to pay attention to your body and communicate any discomfort or symptoms to your guide or fellow trekkers. Always consult with a healthcare professional before embarking on high-altitude treks, especially if you have pre-existing health condition
A normal level of fitness is generally sufficient for this trek, with good overall health being essential. It's important to share any past medical history with your travel agent so your guide can offer proper care. Engaging in light exercises (such as walking or cardio) in the 2–3 months before the trek will help prepare for the physical demands of the journey.
In the event of a Lukla flight cancellation due to weather conditions, we understand that weather is beyond our control. However, we have contingency options available. One alternative is to arrange a helicopter flight to Lukla. It's important to communicate promptly with your travel agents or guide to explore this option, as helicopter availability is time-sensitive and booking in advance is advisable. Helicopter prices may vary, and in case of a cancellation, an approximate cost of around $500 per person is expected. You can later seek a refund from your travel insurance.
Driving to the trek start point is another option, although it takes a longer time. If both options are not feasible, there is a possibility of diverting the trek to an alternative route or region. Having an additional day in your itinerary can be beneficial in such situations. Rest assured, our team, including your guide, will work diligently to ensure the smooth planning and execution of your trek, taking any necessary measures to adapt to unforeseen circumstances

Our guide and team were amazing, ensuring everyone reached their goals and stayed comfortable. The porters and assistant guides were essential, safely transporting our bags and making the trip possible. The itinerary was well-planned, with enough acclimatization days. This was my first trekking trip and I was a little nervous about what to expect, however I had the most amazing experience.
We completed the trek to Everest Base Camp via Gokyo lakes and the Chola Pass, which was tough but ultimately rewarding. Prem and his team looked after us, literally every step of the way. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they provided both moral and practical support. It is not often I would say this - but by the end of the trip we had become firm friends. I can't recommend them enough. A wonderful trip

A group of nine of us embarked on the Gokyo via Everest Base Camp Trek, and along the way, we forged wonderful new friendships with fellow trekkers, guides, and supporters.
Our head guide, Prem, was remarkably energetic and attentive, as were the entire team. They consistently put our needs before theirs, often staying up later and waking up earlier than us. Sushil, the trainer guide, exuded cool confidence and showed great promise. Nima Tamang was a wealth of knowledge, and Amrit never failed to lift our spirits with his encouraging words. One of our supporter crew members may well become a guide in the future - his strong command of English, comedic skills, and dancing prowess are impressive!
Thanks for everything!

In October 2023, our journey to Everest Base Camp through Gokyo Lake was absolutely incredible. The stunning vistas from Gokyo Ri and the fifth lake left us in awe, and crossing Chola Pass offered us not only picturesque landscapes but also an unforgettable experience. Our guide and porters were exceptional, offering unwavering support throughout the trek.
Reaching Everest Base Camp was a rewarding achievement, serving as a crucial milestone for climbers. Our incredible crew's patience and enthusiasm made the entire trek a smooth and enjoyable experience

Loved the adventure of crossing Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La. Less crowded, more wild, and full of stunning surprises. Do this if you want more than just Base Camp!
